How do I know what Career Path is the Best for Me? – Tools and Information for Ontario High School Students

Your parents, your teachers, and even your friends might ask you from time to time, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Perhaps you may have already have the answer, or maybe you have known all your life which career you’d like to pursue. But what if you still don’t know?

Take a deep breath, and relax. The majority of high school students like yourself will need to spend time thinking and exploring different career options to find what interests them, and that’s perfectly normal!

As a high school student, you are in the perfect environment to start thinking and making initial plans about your future before you graduate, but also remember that your plans may easily change. Experts say that a person may change careers (not just jobs!) more than five times in his or her lifetime!

To help you start thinking about which career you might be interested in, ask yourself the following questions:

Who Am I? What are my interests and abilities? What are my character traits and values? What am I passionate about? What inspires me?

Think about what potential subjects may interest you, and what you are good at doing.

Are there any subjects in school that you find interesting or have good marks in? Do you like to help people? Do you follow politics? Do you like learning about technology? Do you play video games? Do you like doing math? Do you write stories in your spare time? Do you draw on paper or on the computer? Etc.

Any interest you have has a potential career path. (Yes, even if you’re interested in video games!) Take some time and think about what interest of yours you might like to pursue.

Do I need to know exactly which job I want?

Remember: You don’t have to know exactly which occupation you want right now. What’s important is to be comfortable with actively exploring your interests and thinking about what likes and dislikes you have. Then, you need to be able to investigate which careers might match your interests and what skills you might need to pursue those careers.

Also, be aware of your abilities. For example, if you know that you struggle with math, certain careers in engineering might not be the right fit for you. Ask your school’s Guidance Counsellor for advice if you’re interested in a certain career and you’re not sure if it’s the right fit for you.

  1. You wrote an excellent blog post on high school. We can relate to it as USCA Academy is a private international school offering programs for elementary school, middle school, high school levels and university level preparation programs. The school also offers the night school and credit courses programs.
